Today's Readings: September 25

[1] Praise the LORD!
Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good,
for his steadfast love endures forever!
[2] Who can utter the mighty deeds of the LORD,
or declare all his praise?
[3] Blessed are they who observe justice,
who do righteousness at all times!


[4] Remember me, O LORD, when you show favor to your people;
help me when you save them,
[5] that I may look upon the prosperity of your chosen ones,
that I may rejoice in the gladness of your nation,
that I may glory with your inheritance.


[6] Both we and our fathers have sinned;
we have committed iniquity; we have done wickedness.
[7] Our fathers, when they were in Egypt,
did not consider your wondrous works;
they did not remember the abundance of your steadfast love,
but rebelled by the sea, at the Red Sea.
[8] Yet he saved them for his name’s sake,
that he might make known his mighty power.
[9] He rebuked the Red Sea, and it became dry,
and he led them through the deep as through a desert.
[10] So he saved them from the hand of the foe
and redeemed them from the power of the enemy.
[11] And the waters covered their adversaries;
not one of them was left.
[12] Then they believed his words;
they sang his praise.


[13] But they soon forgot his works;
they did not wait for his counsel.
[14] But they had a wanton craving in the wilderness,
and put God to the test in the desert;
[15] he gave them what they asked,
but sent a wasting disease among them.


[16] When men in the camp were jealous of Moses
and Aaron, the holy one of the LORD,
[17] the earth opened and swallowed up Dathan,
and covered the company of Abiram.
[18] Fire also broke out in their company;
the flame burned up the wicked.


[19] They made a calf in Horeb
and worshiped a metal image.
[20] They exchanged the glory of God
for the image of an ox that eats grass.
[21] They forgot God, their Savior,
who had done great things in Egypt,
[22] wondrous works in the land of Ham,
and awesome deeds by the Red Sea.
[23] Therefore he said he would destroy them—
had not Moses, his chosen one,
stood in the breach before him,
to turn away his wrath from destroying them.


[24] Then they despised the pleasant land,
having no faith in his promise.
[25] They murmured in their tents,
and did not obey the voice of the LORD.
[26] Therefore he raised his hand and swore to them
that he would make them fall in the wilderness,
[27] and would make their offspring fall among the nations,
scattering them among the lands.


[28] Then they yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor,
and ate sacrifices offered to the dead;
[29] they provoked the LORD to anger with their deeds,
and a plague broke out among them.
[30] Then Phinehas stood up and intervened,
and the plague was stayed.
[31] And that was counted to him as righteousness
from generation to generation forever.


[32] They angered him at the waters of Meribah,
and it went ill with Moses on their account,
[33] for they made his spirit bitter,
and he spoke rashly with his lips.


[34] They did not destroy the peoples,
as the LORD commanded them,
[35] but they mixed with the nations
and learned to do as they did.
[36] They served their idols,
which became a snare to them.
[37] They sacrificed their sons
and their daughters to the demons;
[38] they poured out innocent blood,
the blood of their sons and daughters,
whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan,
and the land was polluted with blood.
[39] Thus they became unclean by their acts,
and played the whore in their deeds.


[40] Then the anger of the LORD was kindled against his people,
and he abhorred his heritage;
[41] he gave them into the hand of the nations,
so that those who hated them ruled over them.
[42] Their enemies oppressed them,
and they were brought into subjection under their power.
[43] Many times he delivered them,
but they were rebellious in their purposes
and were brought low through their iniquity.


[44] Nevertheless, he looked upon their distress,
when he heard their cry.
[45] For their sake he remembered his covenant,
and relented according to the abundance of his steadfast love.
[46] He caused them to be pitied
by all those who held them captive.


[47] Save us, O LORD our God,
and gather us from among the nations,
that we may give thanks to your holy name
and glory in your praise.


[48] Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel,
from everlasting to everlasting!
And let all the people say, “Amen!”
Praise the LORD!

[1] Ah, you destroyer,
who yourself have not been destroyed,
you traitor,
whom none has betrayed!
When you have ceased to destroy,
you will be destroyed;
and when you have finished betraying,
they will betray you.


[2] O LORD, be gracious to us; we wait for you.
Be our arm every morning,
our salvation in the time of trouble.
[3] At the tumultuous noise peoples flee;
when you lift yourself up, nations are scattered,
[4] and your spoil is gathered as the caterpillar gathers;
as locusts leap, it is leapt upon.


[5] The LORD is exalted, for he dwells on high;
he will fill Zion with justice and righteousness,
[6] and he will be the stability of your times,
abundance of salvation, wisdom, and knowledge;
the fear of the LORD is Zion’s treasure.


[7] Behold, their heroes cry in the streets;
the envoys of peace weep bitterly.
[8] The highways lie waste;
the traveler ceases.
Covenants are broken;
cities are despised;
there is no regard for man.
[9] The land mourns and languishes;
Lebanon is confounded and withers away;
Sharon is like a desert,
and Bashan and Carmel shake off their leaves.


[10] “Now I will arise,” says the LORD,
“now I will lift myself up;
now I will be exalted.
[11] You conceive chaff; you give birth to stubble;
your breath is a fire that will consume you.
[12] And the peoples will be as if burned to lime,
like thorns cut down, that are burned in the fire.”


[13] Hear, you who are far off, what I have done;
and you who are near, acknowledge my might.
[14] The sinners in Zion are afraid;
trembling has seized the godless:
“Who among us can dwell with the consuming fire?
Who among us can dwell with everlasting burnings?”
[15] He who walks righteously and speaks uprightly,
who despises the gain of oppressions,
who shakes his hands, lest they hold a bribe,
who stops his ears from hearing of bloodshed
and shuts his eyes from looking on evil,
[16] he will dwell on the heights;
his place of defense will be the fortresses of rocks;
his bread will be given him; his water will be sure.


[17] Your eyes will behold the king in his beauty;
they will see a land that stretches afar.
[18] Your heart will muse on the terror:
“Where is he who counted, where is he who weighed the tribute?
Where is he who counted the towers?”
[19] You will see no more the insolent people,
the people of an obscure speech that you cannot comprehend,
stammering in a tongue that you cannot understand.
[20] Behold Zion, the city of our appointed feasts!
Your eyes will see Jerusalem,
an untroubled habitation, an immovable tent,
whose stakes will never be plucked up,
nor will any of its cords be broken.
[21] But there the LORD in majesty will be for us
a place of broad rivers and streams,
where no galley with oars can go,
nor majestic ship can pass.
[22] For the LORD is our judge; the LORD is our lawgiver;
the LORD is our king; he will save us.


[23] Your cords hang loose;
they cannot hold the mast firm in its place
or keep the sail spread out.
Then prey and spoil in abundance will be divided;
even the lame will take the prey.
[24] And no inhabitant will say, “I am sick”;
the people who dwell there will be forgiven their iniquity.

[1] “At that time shall arise Michael, the great prince who has charge of your people. And there shall be a time of trouble, such as never has been since there was a nation till that time. But at that time your people shall be delivered, everyone whose name shall be found written in the book. [2] And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. [3] And those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the sky above; and those who turn many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever. [4] But you, Daniel, shut up the words and seal the book, until the time of the end. Many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall increase.”

[5] Then I, Daniel, looked, and behold, two others stood, one on this bank of the stream and one on that bank of the stream. [6] And someone said to the man clothed in linen, who was above the waters of the stream, “How long shall it be till the end of these wonders?” [7] And I heard the man clothed in linen, who was above the waters of the stream; he raised his right hand and his left hand toward heaven and swore by him who lives forever that it would be for a time, times, and half a time, and that when the shattering of the power of the holy people comes to an end all these things would be finished. [8] I heard, but I did not understand. Then I said, “O my lord, what shall be the outcome of these things?” [9] He said, “Go your way, Daniel, for the words are shut up and sealed until the time of the end. [10] Many shall purify themselves and make themselves white and be refined, but the wicked shall act wickedly. And none of the wicked shall understand, but those who are wise shall understand. [11] And from the time that the regular burnt offering is taken away and the abomination that makes desolate is set up, there shall be 1,290 days. [12] Blessed is he who waits and arrives at the 1,335 days. [13] But go your way till the end. And you shall rest and shall stand in your allotted place at the end of the days.”

[1] Now concerning the times and the seasons, brothers, you have no need to have anything written to you. [2] For you yourselves are fully aware that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. [3] While people are saying, “There is peace and security,” then sudden destruction will come upon them as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. [4] But you are not in darkness, brothers, for that day to surprise you like a thief. [5] For you are all children of light, children of the day. We are not of the night or of the darkness. [6] So then let us not sleep, as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober. [7] For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, are drunk at night. [8] But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation. [9] For God has not destined us for wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, [10] who died for us so that whether we are awake or asleep we might live with him. [11] Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.

[12] We ask you, brothers, to respect those who labor among you and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, [13] and to esteem them very highly in love because of their work. Be at peace among yourselves. [14] And we urge you, brothers, admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all. [15] See that no one repays anyone evil for evil, but always seek to do good to one another and to everyone. [16] Rejoice always, [17] pray without ceasing, [18] give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. [19] Do not quench the Spirit. [20] Do not despise prophecies, [21] but test everything; hold fast what is good. [22] Abstain from every form of evil.

[23] Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. [24] He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it.

[25] Brothers, pray for us.

[26] Greet all the brothers with a holy kiss.

[27] I put you under oath before the Lord to have this letter read to all the brothers.

[28] The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
