Insight from 1 Thessalonians 5<\/p>\n
Chapter 5 begins with the phrase \u201cNow concerning.\u201d Paul uses this same phrase in 1 Corinthians 7:1, 7:25, and 8:1. There, the phrase is used by Paul as he addresses matters about which the Corinthians had written to Paul.<\/p>\n
“Now concerning the matters about which you wrote \u2026 .” 1 Corinthians 7:1<\/p>\n
The Thessalonians probably sent this question to Paul via Timothy (remember, he had just returned to Paul from the church). The Thessalonians had a question regarding the timing of a particular event.<\/p>\n
“Now concerning the times and the seasons, brothers, you have no need to have anything written to you. For you yourselves are fully aware that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night.” 1 Thessalonians 5:1-2<\/p>\n
The believers wanted to know when \u201cthe day of the Lord\u201d would come. Paul\u2019s answer is very simple: the day of the Lord \u201cwill come like a thief in the night.\u201d He says that the believers were \u201cfully aware\u201d of this, indicating that he had taught them about the day of the Lord and its coming when he was with them. However, they still had questions about this day.<\/p>\n
Before we address Paul\u2019s answer, it is worth considering the meaning of the phrase \u201cthe day of the Lord\u201d, for it is highly significant.
