DeRouchie, <em>How to Understand and Apply the Old Testament: Twelve Steps from Exegesis to Theology<\/em> (Phillipsburg: P&amp;R, 2017), 376\u2013377.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Insight from Colossians 3:5<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Paul does not advocate attempting to control sin in Col 3:5. Rather, he speaks of killing it. A literal translation of the Greek would read something like, \u201cKill, therefore, the members \u2026 the [members] on the earth.\u201d The word \u201cmembers\u201d normally refers to body parts. Paul is not talking about actual body parts in this verse. But sin does use the body, therefore the metaphor makes sense. Paul uses the word \u201cmembers\u201d as a metaphor for specific sinful habits that a Christian might tolerate. Paul\u2019s word choice draws attention to sin as if it is a strange body part needing to be killed. Sin is as out of place in a Christian as an extra arm or leg would be on a person. These sinful habits may be regularly found in earthly people, but they are not to be found or tolerated in people who have been raised with Christ. This explains why Paul speaks of these sinful habits as if they are unwanted parts of the body that must be killed. (Jesus uses this same word in Matt 5:29\u201330 when he speaks about plucking out your eye or cutting off your hand if these \u201cmembers\u201d are causing you to sin.) Paul\u2019s words here demonstrate (1) the Christian must not tolerate sin in his or her life, (2) the Christian, based on his or her position in Christ, is responsible to deal with any sin remaining in his or her life. Dealing with sin requires a decisive action. We must hate sin and kill it. We do not kill the members in our body (our sinful habits) in our own strength. The Holy Spirit helps us do this (see Rom 8:13\u201314). You cannot take the Spirit out of this killing, for he empowers it. And you cannot take yourself out of this killing, for you do it.
