There are five primary Old Testament offerings: burnt offering, grain offering, peace/fellowship offering (see Lev 7:11–36), sin/purification offering, and guilt/reputation offering (see Lev 7:1–10). These chapters also discuss sacrifices. Individual sacrifices included peace offerings (7:15–18) and sin/guilt offerings (7:6–7). The purpose of sacrifices for sin was atonement: the process by which God purifies and (re-)consecrates his contaminated and desecrated Tabernacle and people by pouring out his wrath on the sinner or onto a substitute, thus restoring relationship and right order. Key elements of atonement are (1) purification whereby the sins of the offender are not credited/accounted/imputed toward him but toward the substitute, which includes propitiation (satisfying God’s wrath through payment/ransom for sin) and expiation (purging from defilement/cleansing from sin = forgiveness); and (2) consecration whereby the righteousness/purity of the substitute is credited/accounted/imputed to the trusting sinner (Lev 7:18).

["post-4595","reading-plan","type-reading-plan","status-publish","hentry
["GET
