Insight from 1 Kings<\/p>\n
When we meet Yahweh in the Old Testament, we are catching glimpses of the coming Christ. Recall that Jesus said that \u201cno one has ever seen God\u201d the Father except the Son (John 1:18; 6:46) but that \u201cwhoever has seen me has seen the Father\u201d (John 14:9). Similarly, Paul speaks of the Father as \u201cthe invisible God\u201d (Col. 1:15) \u201cwho dwells in unapproachable light, whom no one has ever seen or can see\u201d (1 Tim. 6:16). Minimally, this means that those who saw God in the Old Testament were enjoying preliminary and partial glimpses of his glory, at times through visions with figurative images. It also implies that, at least in some instances where Yahweh becomes embodied in a human form in the Old Testament, we are likely meeting the preincarnate Son. Such is possible in the stories of Abraham\u2019s third guest, Jacob\u2019s wrestling opponent, Joshua\u2019s \u201ccommander of the Lord\u2019s army\u201d (Josh. 5:13\u201315), Ezekiel\u2019s exalted king, Daniel\u2019s \u201cson of man,\u201d and the numerous manifestations of the \u201cangel\/messenger of Yahweh\u201d (e.g. 1 Kings 19:7) John tells us that we also see Jesus\u2019s glory in Isaiah\u2019s vision of the Lord seated on the throne.
