This comparison is always negative, for Israel never bore good fruit (see Psalm 80:8–16, Isaiah 5:1–7, Jeremiah 2:21, 5:10, 12:10, Ezekiel 15:1–8 and 17:1–24). It is significant to note that Jesus compares himself to a vine in John 15. He is the true vine. As the true vine, he does what Israel never did. He bears good fruit. This demonstrates that Jesus is the new Israel. He is the son of God who perfectly fulfills God’s will. All those in him bear good fruit. Apart from Jesus, there is no other vine. As the true vine, he fulfills the “fruit bearing” purpose Yahweh always had for Israel. As New Testament readers reading this poem in Hosea, we are to think of the true Israel— Jesus—bearing good fruit to the Father’s glory. The only way any person is able to bear good fruit is because that person is connected to the true vine—Jesus.
