Speaking predominantly to the unregenerate, the old covenant charged Israel to pursue righteousness, and it declared that they would only be counted righteous and secure life if they met all the covenant\u2019s demands. yet for Paul, \u2018the very commandment that promised life proved to be death\u2019 (Rom. 7:10). \u2018The law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good\u2019 (Rom. 7:12). Yet the majority in \u2018Israel who pursued a law that would lead to righteousness did not succeed in reaching that law \u2026 because they did not pursue it by faith, but as if it were based on works\u2019 (Rom. 9:31\u201332). Paul can thus declare that \u2018Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes\u2019 (Rom. 10:4), because by Christ\u2019s perfect obedience in life and death God frees believers from sin\u2019s condemning power, declares us righteous and reconciled, and enables us to walk in newness of life.
