Yahweh told Jeremiah that his writing was specifically intended for a future, postexilic, restored community of God (Jer. 30:2–3). While there was the potential that some of Jeremiah’s contemporaries would repent upon hearing his words read, God told Jeremiah that most would not heed his voice, for they would retain the same stubbornness that characterized previous generations. Moreover, 30:2–3 stress that the reason Jeremiah needed to write his words in a book was because the future generations would need them. While his verbal sermons condemned those in his days, his written words were less for his present generation and more for the generations of the restored community. The prophet further notes that only in the latter days would full understanding of his writings come (Jer. 30:24–31:1). Ignorance prevailed in Jeremiah’s day, but true knowledge of God and understanding of his Old Testament teaching would characterize the new covenant community. In Jeremiah, knowledge of God relates to an experiential involvement in the Lord’s commitment to steadfast love, justice, and righteousness (Jer. 9:24; 22:15–16). John later stressed how the knowledge for which Jeremiah longed is now enjoyed by all who are in Christ (1 John 2:20–21).

["post-4604","reading-plan","type-reading-plan","status-publish","hentry
["GET
