For the sake of his name and reputation, God brought the plagues on Egypt and redeemed Israel from slavery. Yahweh gave Israel his old covenant law through Moses to mediate his presence and to display his holiness among the nations. Through lives of radical love overflowing in sustained obedience (Lev. 19:18), Israel could bear witness to the worth and excellencies of God to a watching world. Yahweh would consider their perfect surrender as righteousness, and they would enjoy lasting life (cf. Lev. 26:3–13). Yahweh provided a means of atonement so that they could be near him, and he declared that his presence alone would distinguish them from the nations (Lev. 9:3–6; 10:3). He also restated his promise that a royal deliverer would arise from Jacob who would exercise international influence. Nevertheless, the majority were stubborn, rebellious, and unbelieving. Yahweh did not overcome their hard-heartedness but foretold how they would continue to rebel and suffer exile. Nevertheless, out of his compassion, he would also restore them to the land; raise up a new covenant-mediating prophet like Moses; punish their enemies; incorporate some from the nations; and cause all his people to love Yahweh, hear his voice, and heed his new prophet’s teaching.

["post-4600","reading-plan","type-reading-plan","status-publish","hentry
["GET
