In Christ, our hope is real, and our inheritance is secure. Yet our physical bodies still rest firmly in the old, cursed creation. Believers are to expect suffering, tribulation, and affliction of all sorts. Discipleship comes at great cost. Just as Christ had to endure the cross before enjoying his resurrection body, so too the believer in Christ must carry his cross, identifying with Christ in his suffering, before receiving his resurrection body. God\u2019s discipline nurtures holiness and righteousness in our lives, and we endure today knowing that something better is coming tomorrow. Paul said, \u201cThrough many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God\u201d (Acts 14:22). God has granted that we \u201cshould not only believe in [Christ] but also suffer for his sake\u201d (Phil. 1:29). We are \u201cdestined\u201d for \u201cafflictions\u201d (1 Thess. 3:3), and \u201call who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted\u201d (2 Tim. 3:12). Paul himself experienced trials far broader than persecution\u2014\u201cafflictions, hardships, calamities, beatings, imprisonments, riots, labors, sleepless nights, hunger\u201d (2 Cor. 6:4\u20135; cf. 11:23\u201328). As he did, he said, \u201cIn any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need.
