The portrayal of Pharaoh as a serpent-king (Exod. 3:19–20; 4:2–3; 9:15–16; cf. Ps. 74:13–14; Isa. 51:9–11; Ezek. 29:3; 33:2) allows the original exodus to recall the redemptive promise that the first woman’s offspring would bruise the head of the serpent, thus overcoming the curse and bringing blessing from God to the world (Gen. 3:15; cf. 22:17–28).

Because Moses himself treats the exodus event as a typological pattern for future deliverance (Exod. 15:12–16), the prophets naturally used exodus imagery to portray the future end-time redemption that God promised and that was associated with his messianic king. Isaiah predicted that in the Messiah’s day—the day of the second exodus—Yahweh’s people would praise and thank him because “the LORD GOD is my strength and my song, and he has become my salvation” (Isa. 12:2; cf. Exod. 15:2). Revelation 15:1–4 fulfills that “new song” (cf. Rev. 5:9–10; 14:3): those of us surviving the Lord’s wrath will once again stand next to a quieted sea while singing “the song of Moses, the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb.” Through his life, death, and resurrection, Jesus representatively inaugurated a new exodus on behalf of God’s people (Luke 9:30–31; cf. Matt. 11:5 with Isa. 35:5–6; 61:1–2; Mark 1:1–3 with Isa. 40:3). The result is that those in him “go out” and “separate” from the world (2 Cor. 6:17; cf. Isa. 52:11), following the Lord en route to the consummated new creational rest (Heb. 4:8; cf. Matt. 11:28).”

["post-4544","reading-plan","type-reading-plan","status-publish","hentry
["GET
